The R2JESU team builds a large robot to compete in FRC events that follow a different theme and objective each year. This involves building the robot, coding it, marketing it, and much more! There is something for everyone on the robotics team!
The robotics season is similar to that of a winter sport. Kickoff day is in early January where we receive the game for the year and we build our robot for our first competition, The St. Louis Regional, in mid march. This is when we do the bulk of the work but there are still meetings and competitions in other parts of the year.
First Robotics Competition is not like battle bots! There are rules against pinning other robots and causing damage to other robots.
Our schedule varies throughout the year.
August-December: Two hour meetings once a week after school.
January-March: Two hour meetings four days a week, more as needed.
April-May: Two hour meetings usually once a week, more as needed.
June-July: Two hour meetings twice a month to reset for the school year.
While this schedule sounds like a lot, it is about the same level of commitment as a sport and we are more than happy to work around members' schedules.
There's no cost to join the team but we do ask that you purchase the season shirt each year for competitions!
Nope! We are happy to accept all prospective members and will teach you everything you need to know.
Generally, the St. Louis Regional falls on a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in March so you will have to miss two days of school. Per school policies, it's marked as an excused absence where students are to make up any work within a cycle (see student handbook). All of our other competitions occur during the summer or on weekends.
There are countless benefits to being part of a robotics team. It teaches you valuable skills for all areas of work but especially engineering, computer science, and business. Through robotics, you will meet many people who may be able to help you in your career. It teaches the importance of communication and community. Not only do you grow closer to your team, but the robotics community as a whole at all of the competitions we go to. The robotics team is a place for everybody to come together and share their talents.
Yes! Some teams have more work than others so it is up to every member to customize their workload and responsibilities. Team members may be asked to do work outside of their sub-team.
